Wildflowers, Arranged by Anjie Carpenter, 2019
Lyrics/ Music by Dolly Parton and Tom Petty

During the summer of 2019, Anjie spent hours wandering through the wilds around her home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. She became enchanted with, and later taught by, the wildflowers all around her there. Week after week, as she walked, she pondered Dolly's beautiful autobiographical metaphor, comparing herself to the wildflowers, so carefree, and mused over Tom Petty's urging, "You belong among the wildflowers. As she photographed the wildlfowers, laying on her belly in their midst or reaching on tippy-toe for just the right angle, she felt the sense of belonging Tom wrote of. It was then she decided she must do a mash-up of these two songs accompanied by all the footage of wildflowers she captured. The video of the song and the stunning wildflowers can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBsFUyU6yuQ

Lyrics

Wildflowers, arranged by Anjie Carpenter, copyright, Anjie's Tunes, 2019

The hills were alive with wildflowers and I
Was as wild, even wilder than they
For at least I could run
They just died in the sun
I refused to just wither in place

Just a wild mountain rose
Needing freedom to grow
So I ran fearing not where I'd go
When a flower grows wild, it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

You belong among the the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free

And the flowers I knew in the fields where I grew
Were content to be lost in the crowd
They were common and close, and I had no room to grow
I wanted so much to branch out
So I uprooted myself from my home ground and left
Took my dreams and I took to the road
When a flower grows wild, it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares, compares with you

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free

I grew up fast and wild and I never felt right
In a garden so different from me
I just never belonged, and I longed to be gone
And so one day the garden set me free

I hitched a ride with the wind and since he was my friend
I just let him decide where we'd go
When a flower grows wild, it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by

Just a wild mountain rose seeking mysteries untold
No regret for the path that I chose
When a flower grows wild it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from all your troubles and worries
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free
